  • We highly recommend stargazing activities while you are here in Muskoka. You can use this website to check for events and weather before your stay: https://spaceweather.com/

  • Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve in Muskoka is a must visit for the coolest look at the Milky Way! You do not want to miss this.

If You Love Bakeries:

  • We highly recommend you make the trip to Orillia (about 25 min) to visit the famous Mariposa Bakery. Be sure to arrive early as they sell out daily! They offer so many treats like fritters, pies, custom cakes, tarts and more, as well as a full candy store, deli and restaurant. This is a must visit!

  • Try out our kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. Or, if you like more speed, check out our partner rental company Rogue Marine where you can rent jet skis, motor boats, pontoons and more! Check out Lock 45 that brings you to Georgian Bay, or travel up to the Big Chute and take the marine railway up to the Severn River.

If You are Looking for a Spa Day:

  • Check our Vetta Spa in Horseshoe Valley for the most relaxing day. Hot and cold pools. saunas, massages, hot rock rooms and more. They even have a restaurant on site so you can stay as long as you want. You will have to book ahead as they get super busy on weekends.

If You Love Hiking:

  • Check out Tay Shore Trail in Waubaushene (about a 10 min drive). Its a fully paved walking/biking trail that takes you along Georgian Bay all the way to Midland. This is an easy trail for all abilities, and we recommend walking this for sunset. There is also a beach area by this trail that you can use at any time. To get there: take the 400 south and take the second exit to Midland (highway 12). Go straight through the lights and keep going straight until you end up right in the parking lot.

  • If you want a harder trail check out McCrae Lake. McCrae Lake takes you to a fantastic overlook over Georgian Bay, as well as to a waterfall. Here are the coordinates on google maps for the parking lot: https://www.google.com/maps/place/McCrae+Lake,+Georgian+Bay,+ON+L0K+1S0/@44.9214901,-79.7776797,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x4d2ae5e3268d7145:0x1de4d162b0725239!8m2!3d44.9222721!4d-79.7772217

  • If you are even more adventurous check out Georgian Bay Islands National Park over in honey Harbour (about a 10 min drive). You can take a ferry out to the island where there are many trails to choose from. Ranging from all different difficulties, there is a trail here for anyone.

If You Love the Beach:

  • Just down the road from us at Port Severn Park, the city cleared and dug an area for a nice beach with a dock to jump off of as well. Also located here is a splash pad for kids and a small ice cream stand.

  • If you are up for a drive check out Balm Beach in Midland. This is a larger beach with a small downtown area to grab food and ice cream.

If You Have a Boat:

  • You can launch your boat right here at Sunnylea, or down the street at Port Severn Park. We recommend taking your boat through Lock 45 to Georgian Bay (explore the islands like Giant Tomb Island, boat into Midland, or wrap around to Honey Harbour), or explore the Trent Severn Waterway by taking the Big Chute and Swift Rapids Lock. You can also visit a water access only restaurant called The Waubic. This restaurant is super popular and for a good reason. Be sure to get here early, or be prepared for close to a two hour wait on weekends.

  • There is also a marina right up from Sunnylea Resort through the channel called Starport where you can get gas if you need it. Be cautious, a lot of our water gas stations close at 5pm, and the locks close at different times depending on the day of the week and season. Be sure to double check the times they close so you wont get stuck in a different body of water.

  • A must do here in Muskoka is visiting Muskoka Farm and Winery no matter what the season. You can do wine tours, walking tours, or just hang out and eat as well. This is located in the beautiful town of Bala. If you are here in the winter you do not want to miss out on their Light the Night Ice Skating Trail. Located only 10 min away from Mount St Louis Moonstone, you can spend the day skiing or snowboarding before you come back to a cozy cabin with a fireplace. Horseshoe Valley also offers snow tubing and skiing, and if you don't have your own gear, no worries! Both hills offer full rentals.

  • We also highly recommend checking out Muskoka Farm and Winery for their Light the Night Skating Trail. You can skate across their frozen cranberry bog at night, enjoy campfires, fondue and snacks. They also offer snowshoe trails all over their property.

  • Arrowhead Provincial Park is about 45 min away from us and they offer one of the largest skating trails in the area if you are looking for more skating options!

That's right, Port Severn Road is actually a designated snowmobile trail in the winter. You can leave straight from your cabin and hit the trails for a full day of fun!

  • Do you enjoy fishing? You can ice fish right outside the resort on the lake in the winter as well.

Best Things to do in the Fall:

  • Be sure to check out the Honey Bee Festival in Honey Harbour each fall, usually at the end of September. There are local vendors set up right on the water to visit, purchase local honey, visit the art show and more!

  • You have not experienced Muskoka until you check out one of our huge Cranberry Festivals. Bala Cranberry Festival happens in mid October, and brings in people from all over. Check out food vendors, cranberry desserts and drinks, live music, entertainment and even lumberjack competitions!

  • Muskoka Lakes Farm and Winery also hosts a celebration at the same time where you can taste cranberry wine and walk through the cranberry bog.

  • As the leaves change colour make sure you hit the trails to enjoy the view, or take a ferry to enjoy the leaves from the water. Sunset Cruises in Port Carling will give you the best experience across the three big lakes in the Muskoka region.

  • You can also go for a paddle here at Sunnylea on a kayak to enjoy the changing leaves from the water.

  • Horseshoe Valley and Mount St Louis also offer mountain biking trails at their hills for some high speed fun!
